Indonesia backs community mental health

Signalling a new phase in Indonesian-Australian health relations, the Indonesian Ministry of Health recently invited AAMH to Jakarta to discuss further strategies for collaboration.

During their productive 3 day visit in February, AAMH met with the Director/General of the Ministry of Health, Director of Mental Health, Ministry of Health, Directors of 34 Mental Hospitals in Indonesia, WHO-Indonesia, AusAID Indonesia, University of Indonesia and several other stakeholders. As a result of these meetings, a ground-breaking strategy for developing community mental health services in Indonesia is currently being developed.

The Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing recognises AAMH's work with Indonesia as an active area of collaboration under the existing bilateral Memorandum of Understanding. The Australia Indonesia Institute, part of the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, also supports AAMH's work with Indonesia through the sponsorship of two Indonesian psychiatrists to train in community mental health with AAMH in Australia.
