Hong Kong-Australia Collaboration in Mental Health

Hong Kong and Australia have shared a long and important history in collaborating on community mental health development programs, through training and sharing knowledge.  Read more about this important relationship below.

2011

Trainers Greg Miller and Kate Lheude delivered the 4th Multi-professional Case Management Program for Case Managers (Personalised Care Program for People with Severe Mental Illness) training program in November 2011. This was a two-week intensive course was delivered to approximately 60 participants, whose disciplines ranged from nursing, occupational therapy and social work.

The unique collaboration between AAMH and the Chinese University of Hong Kong continued throughout 2011 as our partners were invited to deliver a multi professional case management program for staff of the Hong Kong Hospital Authority.  The Hospital Authority is the national public health provider, currently managing 41 public hospitals and institutions in Hong Kong.

The new system of Personalised Care Programs aims to develop multi-disciplinary staff with the proficiency to work in community settings for clients with severe mental illnesses.  The new system also ensures continuity of care for clients by adopting a holistic approach to the person’s well-being.  Experienced trainers from St. Vincent’s Mental Health and from North Western Mental Health have worked with AAMH Co-Director Margaret Goding to develop material and deliver the program alongside experienced and expert Hong Kong trainers, co-ordinated by Professor CHIU Fung Kum Helen, Professor of Psychiatry (Clinical) & Chairman, Chinese University, Hong Kong.

July 2010

National public health providers, the Hong Kong Hospital Authority, currently manage 41 public hospitals and institutions.  The Hospital Authority are focused on being a "people-first" organisation, 'Healthy People, Happy Staff, Trusted by the Community'.  The Hospital Authority propose to train staff in the development of community-oriented mental health service with close partnerships between other areas of medicine and mental health.

A unique collaboration was developed in response to this call for training.  A two week program was collaboratively planned by the Hong Kong Hospital Authority, Asia Australia Mental Health and the Department of Psychiatry, at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.  This maximised the tremendous success of the relationship from the previous pioneering initiative of the China - Hong Kong - Melbourne Tripartite Community Mental Health Training Program.

Experienced trainers from St. Vincent's Mental Health travelled to Hong Kong and a wide range of speakers were co-ordinated by Professor CHIU Fung Kum Helen, Professor of Psychiatry (Clinical) & Chairman, Chinese University, Hong Kong.
