Background to the 686 Program: The Australia-China partnership beginnings
The Australia-China partnership in mental health began over 20 years ago through the pioneering work of Professor Shen Yucun in China with the University of Melbourne ‘s Professor Bruce Singh and Professor Ed Chiu in Melbourne.
Up until 2003, the Australia-China mental health relationship was based on people to people linkages and exchange. For example: Prof Yu Xin was a student of Ed Chui’s in Melbourne during the time Australia was moving from an institution focused mental health service to one that was focused on the patient and community mental health service delivery.
Then, in 2003, the Myer Foundation took an unprecedented leap of faith and funded the newly formed Asia-Australia Mental Health consortium partners to work with Peking University’s Institute of Mental Health on developing community based mental health care solutions.
