Stages of the 686 Program: Future Directions
Due to the success of the program over the past three years, the MOH plans to greatly expand and extend the project activities throughout the whole country both in urban and rural areas. Under the wise guidance of Madam Kong Lingzhi and Ms Yan Jun, mental health in China is very rapidly providing inspiration for our region. The work that we need to undertake together is immense. Most recently on 5 March 2008, Premier Wen Jiabao, in his Government Work Report stated , “China will strengthen the prevention of local epidemics and infections, occupation- related diseases and Mental Health.”
We work now as one team, not Chinese nor Australian but a team that understands each others strengths and needs and is focused on improving the lives of the most marginal in any population - people with mental illness.
Dr Liu Jin from the Institute of Mental Health, Peking University was a keynote speaker at WPA International Congress 2008 in Melbourne. She outlined the progress of the 686 project. View an excerpt of her presentation here [pdf, 138 kb, 7 pages].
