Training in Malaysia
In 2006, the Malaysia-Australia Cooperation in Psychiatry and Mental Health began a training program to build capacity in the Malaysian mental health workforce to deliver effective community based mental health care.
As part of this program, Asia-Australia Mental Health initially facilitated a three day intensive workshop on mental health leadership for clinicians and Ministry of Health officials in the Genting Highlands Malaysia in January 2006. Following this, members of the mental health leadership of Malaysia were hosted by AAMH in Melbourne (November 2006) for a study visit. In addition, 2 teams of multi-disciplinary staff from Malaysia undertook month long clinical placements at St. Vincent's Mental Health (November 2006, May 2007).
Prior to this initiative, St. Vincent's Mental Health in conjunction with Asia-Australia Mental Health delivered two in-country workshops centring on Therapeutic Response to Aggression Management (TRAM). The first workshop occurred in Johor Bahru from 25-26 February, 2005. The second workshop, also in Johor Bahru, occurred on 22nd May 2006 in association with the 31st AGM of the Malaysian Mental Health Association.
