Contemporary Leadership and Management

Moving from a hospital-based focus to a community based service delivery requires new thinking.  These modules develop the skills and understanding to effectively influence change, a vital aspect of contemporary leadership.


1. Contemporary Leadership


Modules here could include
A. What is leadership and what is management?
B. Common leadership traits and behaviours
C. Leadership in particular contexts
D. Leadership and change
E. Value drivers-How to establish what is important? How to align vision with values?
F. Encountering the challenges-Dealing with problems, complexity and obstacles
G. Importance of teams and teamwork- How to build and lead successful high performing teams
H. Dealing with conflict
I. Engaging and managing stakeholders across all sectors, i.e. government, community, professional, academic and community
J. Selling the change – managing the communication of the vision to internal and external stakeholders, dealing with the media

2. Planning and Development of Strategy


Planning is identifying where you want to go, why you want to go there, how you will get there, what you need in order to get there and how you will know if you're there or not.  Modules under planning could include the following
A. Basic generic guidelines for successful planning and implementation: Developing systematised approaches to all stages of the planning cycle
B. Developing specific plans e.g.
I. strategic plans to determine where an organization is going over the next year or more, how it's going to get there and how it'll know if it got there or not. The focus of a strategic plan is usually on the entire organization, while the focus of a program plan is usually on a particular product, service or program
II. business plans necessary to assist in implementing new organisation  product or service, expanding a current organization, product or service, working to improve the management of a current organization, product or service. Business plans help to clarify the organization's plans and ensure that key leaders are all on the same track
III. program plans to accomplish certain major goal or set of goals within the business plan
IV. project plans to accomplish a specific (and usually) one-time effort

Evaluation

Program evaluation is increasingly a core part of the planning and development of a successful and sustainable program.  It is critical to carry out program evaluations to ensure that the quality of is continually improved.  This module will help to understand and identify methods of carrying out an evaluation of the program.
